The Magna Carta is a medieval charter which aimed to curtail the power of the King of England.

The authors were English barons who had themselves suffered at the hands of the King.

It is often seen as an early attempt at a democratic bill of rights, although there is now believed to have been an even older document, or pact, composed in the Anglo Saxon period.

Despite the King agreeing to the charter, he later reneged on the deal, which led to the Barons War of 1215-1217.
