Varangian Guard
The Varangian Guard was a professional, and elite, unit of the Byzantine army. It was composed of men hailing from many different locations, including Norsemen and Anglo Saxons. When later Normans went to war with the Byzantines, the end result was that Anglo Saxons (who had themselves been defeated in the 1066 battle against William the Conqueror) found themselves up against the Normans once again.
